A multivitamin subscription brand has revealed the top 10 most nutritious baked goods, based on the vitamin and mineral content of traditional recipes, to celebrate the hit TV show the Great British Bake Off.
Nutritionists at WeAreFeel created the list of the top 10 most vitamin-packed baked goods, by calculating how much of a key vitamin and/or mineral each traditional recipe provides, including cake, pie and bread.
It's findings show that a traditional carrot cake recipe uses 140g of carrots, and serves 15 slices, which equates to 72mcg (micrograms) of vitamin A, therefore one slice of carrot cake provides 11% of an adult's RDA. A banana bread recipe contains 220g of banana, and serves 8 slices, which equates to 112.5mg of potassium, therefore one slice provides 3.2% of an adult's RDA.
The top 10 most vitamin-packed baked goods per slice based on an adult's RDA are:
- Sweet potato pie - 92% RDA of vitamin A
- Rhubarb crumble - 13% RDA of vitamin C, 10% of calcium
- Strawberry cheesecake - 27.9% RDA of vitamin C
- Orange polenta cake - 18.6% RDA of vitamin C
- Carrot cake - 11% of RDA vitamin A
- Hummingbird cake - 8.7% of vitamin C
- Tomato and olive bread - 7.4% of vitamin C
- Banana bread - 5% of vitamin B6, 3.2% of potassium
- Beetroot brownies - 2.2% of vitamin C
- Apple fruit cake - 1% vitamin C, 2.5% of Iron, 2.5% of vitamin B6

The nutritionists advise that water soluble vitamins such as vitamin C can be degraded when heated, therefore when rhubarb, for example, is cooked into a crumble, the level of vitamin C the rhubarb provides when ingested is reduced, compared to if it were eaten raw.

WeAreFeel.com CEO Boris Hodekal, says,
"The Great British Bake Off has been a hit with the British public for a good few years now, as a society we just love baked goods! So we thought it would be interesting to see what the most nutritious baked goods are, based on the recipe's vitamin and mineral value.
"Many might be surprised to know that apple fruit cake and beetroot brownies aren't that nutritious, where as sweet potato pie is packed full of vitamin A, you just need one slice and you've pretty much reached your RDA. Hopefully our research will make those with a sweet tooth feel a little less guilty about indulging in a slice of pie or cake, however as with everything, moderation and balance is key!"
