With the weather taking a distinct nose dive, it is fair to say that autumn is well on its way. This means that along with the warmer weather it's time to say goodbye to salads and al fresco dining for a while. It also means that it's time to dust off those cookbooks and start planning some of your favourite hearty warming meals that make us all look forward to autumn.

Let's take a look at some of the kitchenware essentials that will really get your home ready for autumn.

The essential slow cooker

A slow cooker, or as people sometimes like to refer to them a crockpot, is an absolute must in any busy modern kitchen. There really is nothing quite like coming home to the warm and inviting smell of a hot meal that is almost ready to eat after a long day at work. They are great for throwing together a range of different casserole type dishes, for long slow stewing of meat or a whole range of comforting dishes. Slow cookers are cheap to run and can help you make the most of seasonal vegetables and cheaper cuts of meat. This makes them a fantastic addition to any kitchen.

The season for soup making

There is nothing quite like a bowl of filling homemade soup to warm you up in the autumn and this means making sure that you have a large enough pot to rustle up a good batch of your favourite soup. A stockpot is a great addition to any kitchen. It can be used to bulk cook your favourite soup, homemade stock or even stews on your stovetop.

If you are making soup, then you may also want to consider a blender to help you create silky smooth soups. If you have plenty of cupboard space then a jug blender is a great investment. That will also allow you to make smoothies. However, if space is at a premium then a stick blender may be a better option.

A great investment – the casserole dish

Another fantastic piece of kitchenware that will come into its own as the weather gets colder is a good quality casserole dish. Great for using on the hob, in the oven or a combination of both a good cast iron casserole is great for making fluffy rice dishes as well as casseroles. They also look nice enough to bring to the table to serve guests from.

Autumnal picnics

You might think that as the weather gets colder the opportunities for outdoor eating vanish. However, there is something to be said for a bracing walk in the colours of autumn followed by a rest on a bench to admire a fantastic view. A food flask, or food jar, is a must on a long walk and whether you fill it with hot tea, coffee or even some delicious homemade soup. This is the perfect way to keep warm outdoors whilst enjoying everything that autumn has to offer.

The perfect coffee

The colder weather offers a great excuse to wrap up warmly with a good book and a great cup of your favourite hot beverage. If you are a coffee lover, then making the perfect cup of coffee is something of an art that requires the right equipment. If you have often considered investing in a coffee maker, then why not treat yourself this autumn? Of course the right cup of coffee also deserves the best coffee cups so add those to your list as well. Then when the weather outside is horrible you can curl up with the perfect drink.
