How to navigate the moving process during Christmas
Buying a house can be stressful at any time of year, but it’s common knowledge that moving around Christmas can be particularly difficult. You may be travelling to see family or having them come to stay with you, never mind the presents to sort and festivity to try and enjoy. Here are some top tips on navigating your move so that you can still have a merry Christmas.
Accept help
Everyone has their own Christmas traditions, and it can often be hard to consider celebrating differently or not doing things your own way. However, if you are moving around during the holidays, being more flexible with your Christmas day can save you a lot of stress. If a family member offers to host or bring a dish along, accept the help where you can as you are going to have lots of unpacking to do.
Pack an essentials box
Packing an essentials box is handy for any move; having easy access to your kettle, mugs, tea bags and loo roll makes the day of moving far less stressful. This box should be moved with you, rather than in a removal van, meaning you know where it is and can unpack it as soon as you arrive. As you’re moving at Christmas, why not pack some mince pies and Quality Street to enjoy as you unpack and get settled?
Scale back on decorations
For many of us, Christmas decorations play a massive part in our Christmas celebrations. Unfortunately, if you are moving house close to Christmas there is a high chance that you won’t be able to decorate on the same scale that you usually do. If you’ve bought a new home then it will be easier to decorate as you’re starting with a clean slate, however, if you’ve bought an older property then chances are there are things you are going to want to do to the house. This may mean that decorating isn’t possible. However, nothing is stopping you from going for a scaled-back decorating approach. A couple of ornaments and some fairy lights can be really effective at injecting some festivity without having to put in the time and effort of getting a tree.
Take a break
As tempting as it is to go full steam ahead with the move, be sure to factor in some breaks into your schedule to allow yourself and your family to enjoy some Christmas fun. This could be anything from a couple of hours spent watching your favourite Christmas film, to spending the day at the Christmas markets. Doing this means you still get to experience some of the festivities and will make you more productive once you get back to moving admin.
Capture memories
No matter how different this Christmas may be, it is important to capture memories. In years to come, when you are far more settled into your fully decorated home, you will be able to look back fondly at your first Christmas in your home, even if it was spent on beanbags without a telly!
