Celebrities who’ve suffered head injuries
With the annual cost of traumatic brain injuries in the UK standing at £15 billion, head injuries are more common than you might think. Whether down to workplace accidents, road traffic collisions, assault, or otherwise, thousands of people make head injury claims each year - even celebrities are not immune to an unfortunate knock on the head. Take a look at this selection of celebs who’ve suffered head injuries and remember to keep yourself safe out there!
Lady Gaga - Glamorous pop queen Lady Gaga suffered a concussion when her backup dancer accidentally struck her head with a prop onstage. The injury was sustained when Gaga was on the road for her Born This Way campaign, with the star suffering a mild concussion that led to her makeup artist providing some much-needed aftercare. Luckily, Lady Gaga was able to complete her show, belting out another 16 songs after the accident - the show must go on!
Jackie Chan - As an accomplished stuntman and fight choreographer, international martial arts star Jackie Chan is known for amassing hundreds of injuries over the years. As well as breaking his ribs, jaw, pelvis, sternum, ankles, and knees in the line of duty, Jackie also suffered a particularly nasty head injury on the set of First Strike, an action classic released in 1996. This on-set knock to the head led to Jackie sustaining a broken nose and concussion.
Richard Hammond - Beloved for his on-screen antics with Jeremy Clarkson and James May in what has become known as the definitive Top Gear team, Richard Hammond is no stranger to speed. Having regularly performed dangerous driving stunts and extreme maneuvers for the Top Gear show, Hammond is an adept driver with skills at the wheel. Despite his driving prowess, Hammond was involved in a serious accident back in 2006, when he lost control of a high-speed jet-powered car. The TV star suffered a serious brain injury, undergoing personality changes after the incident. Although long-term rehabilitation was required to nurse Hammond back to his previous self, he’s fighting fit today and still behind the wheel.
Frankie Muniz - Best known as the baby-faced star of the iconic 2000s family sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, Frankie Muniz went on to become an actor and celebrity in his own right. Despite his initial success as Malcolm, Frankie Muniz retains little memory of his time on the show. Muniz’s inability to recall certain memories has been attributed to concussions sustained as a teenager, although the cause of these has not been determined. It is said that the head injuries suffered by Frankie have led to portions of his memory being wiped (amnesia), as well as mini-strokes that occurred later in life. Despite his health struggles, the actor has gone on to forge an illustrious career, last appearing on the silver screen in 2018.
