While tiles have always been a key design element in homes, searches have massively increased recently. So, why have they ‘Blown Up’ in 2025?

ROCCIA designers answer this year’s FAQ on all things tiles!

“Innovation is driving the demand,” says Gavin Farrington, head of design at ROCCIA, a leading retailer of luxury tiles, bathrooms and kitchens.

“When you consider all the ‘looks’ that people are trying to achieve in their home – tiles can cover them all and offer a functional, long lasting, low maintenance alternative to many materials.

“Porcelain tiles make a great copy-cat, and designs are becoming more advanced than ever before! For example, wood-look porcelain floor tiles are now soaring in popularity, and it’s easy to see why. Porcelain or ceramic floor tiles that mimic the effect of wood are extremely hard wearing, water resistant and give the nature-inspired texture-led element that’s trending in homes.

“For homeowners who want an organic, natural vibe then matt, textured stone-effect or sugar finish porcelain tiles meet this brief. To complement this natural aesthetic, porcelain floors work exceptionally well with underfloor heating – removing the need for wall mounted radiators for a ‘clean, natural’ design approach.

“And with more and more ‘sensory’ and wellbeing driven homes, tiles provide tactile and visual appeal, whether that’s a rich texture that draws you in to touch or a smooth calming sheen.”

“It’s the same for #trending wall panelling and acoustic wall coverings. Instead of wood panelling, porcelain panelling-effect wall tiles give a more luxurious look but achieve the same overall aesthetic. Acoustic Tiles – like the Acoustic Pearl Porcelain tiles – are ideal for use throughout the home – from bathrooms to modern media rooms.

“Even bathroom tiles have increased in popularity in the past half a decade (up + 250%).”

“But this year’s one to watch I’d say is ‘large format tiles’ – this is what’s in most demand in 2025 – and thanks to new production techniques and capabilities they’re getting even bigger! Large format (120 x 120cm) and now XL tiles (size 120 x 260cm) create expansive, uninterrupted surfaces that exude contemporary elegance. These tiles reduce grout lines, offering a sleek and seamless look that's both modern and easy to maintain. They also come in an array of designs from marble to stone-effect.”

“For XL format tiles, porcelain is the material of choice. Lighter in weight than standard ceramic tiles and stone slabs, these thin tiles are easier to transport and fit. In terms of practicality, porcelain is hardwearing and easy to clean, ensuring the tiles stay in great condition for many years.

“And they’re not just for large mansions! While they’re frequently used in open-plan spaces, large format floor and wall tiles can make a small bathroom feel bigger.”

Searches for Outdoor Porcelain Tiles have also increased + 650% in the past five years (alongside Porcelain Patio Tiles + 350%) – what’s driving this trend?

“Like the demand for porcelain floor tiles for use indoors, anti-slip porcelain outdoor tiles are more hard wearing than wood decking and look so much more aesthetically pleasing than concrete slabs and stone paving.

“Outdoor flooring is a central element of the ongoing trend where we’re investing much more in our outdoor living spaces than ever before, creating a flow from the indoor to outdoor living area.

“People are installing outdoor kitchens, pergolas, alfresco sofas and areas anchored with large outdoor rugs; and large format porcelain tiles complete the look. Moreover, for anyone who has spent hours jet washing concrete or stone slabs, they will know that cleaning porcelain tiles once a year is a much easier job!”

There were lots of tile trend predictions for this year (from natural stone to bold colours), but what’s the biggest shift in tile trends for 2025 that ROCCIA’s actually seeing?

“Overall, the trends in tiles are being led by how tiles are being used throughout the home – because of their versatility and decorative application. The extensive choice that’s available in 2025, being driven by innovation in production and greater experimentation, is enabling homeowners to customise their spaces more creatively.

“People are using tiles in some unexpected ways in 2025, beyond just bathrooms and kitchens, and with #TikTokTiles and #CreativityWithTiles exploding on social media – inspirational new ways to use tiles shared in these channels are encouraging more creative applications like feature walls, staircases, exteriors and outdoor spaces; even as standalone art pieces.

“Designers are drawing inspiration from historical and cultural motifs to add visual interest and texture to various areas of the home. This trend showcases the versatility and decorative potential of tiles in modern interiors.”

“Popular choices include marble-effect tiles, which provide a sophisticated look without the maintenance associated with natural marble. Additionally, stone-effect and wood-effect tiles are favoured for their durability and timeless appeal. These selections allow homeowners to achieve their desired aesthetic while adhering to their budget constraints.”

ROCCIA is known for its high-end, design-led approach to tiles. What are the biggest customer questions you're getting right now when it comes to tile choices?

“As well as wanting to know the current trends, homeowners are asking about sustainability. Here we’re able to highlight brands and products that are produced with lower carbon emission or that use recycled materials.

“ROCCIA's new wellness collection is centred around creating spaces that promote mental and physical well-being through thoughtful interior design. Our approach combines aesthetic beauty with functionality, emphasising key wellness elements such as air quality, natural light, and biophilic design principles, which integrate nature into indoor environments. ROCCIA's unique blend of wellness-driven elements with high-end design enables homeowners to create spaces that encourage relaxation, stimulate creativity, and enhance overall well-being.

“The collection includes premium tiles designed not only for their durability and low maintenance but also for their calming and restorative qualities; in a variety of textures, colours, and finishes, from stone and wood effects to bold onyx and patterned designs, aiming to transform homes into peaceful, rejuvenating sanctuaries. The collection also focuses on sustainable materials and eco-friendly designs, aligning with the growing trend towards environmentally conscious living.”

Many homeowners worry about trends dating quickly. What are some tile choices that will still feel current five to ten years from now?

“Timeless tile choices are all about balancing classic aesthetics with contemporary appeal. Natural stone-effect porcelain tiles, mimicking the look of marble and limestone, never go out of style—especially in soft, neutral tones like warm beiges, and off-whites. Large-format tiles with minimal grout lines offer a seamless, high-end look that will feel effortlessly elegant for years to come. If you’re drawn to patterns, opt for subtle, geometric motifs or classic herringbone and chevron layouts, which add visual interest without feeling overly trend driven.

“Texture is another key to longevity. Matt or honed finishes bring a sophisticated, organic feel that works across various interior styles, from modern minimalism to timeless traditional. When it comes to colour, deep greens, rich blues, and earthy terracottas are enduring choices that bring depth without looking dated.

“If you love a bold statement, consider timeless materials like terrazzo or encaustic-inspired designs—both have been around for centuries and continue to evolve with modern interpretations. Ultimately, longevity in tile design comes from choosing high-quality materials in refined, understated finishes that transcend passing trends.”

For those renovating on a budget, what are the smartest ways to use tiles to create a high-end look without overspending?

“Smart tile choices can transform a space without draining your budget, and the trick lies in using premium-looking designs in a strategic way. Instead of tiling an entire room, focus on key feature areas - think a statement splashback in the kitchen, a chic half-wall in the bathroom, or a striking fireplace surround. Large-format tiles in stone or marble-effect finishes create an opulent, high-end aesthetic with fewer grout lines, making any space feel grander. If you’re drawn to intricate patterns, consider laying metro tiles in a herringbone or chevron design; this instantly elevates the look while keeping material costs low.

“Another savvy approach is mixing high-quality tiles with cost-effective ones. Use luxurious, textured tiles in small doses—such as a vertical stripe in a shower or a bordered floor—while filling the rest with budget-friendly, neutral tiles. Matte finishes exude a contemporary elegance, while gloss tiles reflect light beautifully, making smaller rooms feel more expansive. And don’t overlook grout colour—contrasting shades can define shapes and create a bespoke designer feel. Ultimately, it’s all about smart styling; with the right choices, even the most budget-friendly tiles can deliver a showstopping finish.”
