With energy prices staying above pre-energy crisis levels, many households across Great Britain are still feeling the pinch.  It’s important to know what help is available to manage and reduce your energy bills, especially ahead of the winter months. From government schemes to local support, there are many places you can go to for resources, support and advice.

Government Schemes

1. Warm Home Discount Scheme

The Warm Home Discount Scheme offers a one-off discount on your electricity bill, usually given between September and March. If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, or are on a low income, you might qualify for this discount. If you’re eligible, your energy supplier should apply the discount to your bills automatically. Unless you’re on a low income and in Scotland, in which case you will need to apply through your energy supplier.

2. Winter Fuel Payment

Those born on or before 25th September 1957, could get between £250 and £600 to help with heating costs. This is called the Winter Fuel Payment. Most payments are made automatically between November and December for people who are eligible, but if you haven't received it, you can claim it by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

3. Cold Weather Payment

If the temperature drops to zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days, those who are eligible should automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment. This scheme provides £25 for each qualifying week between the 1st November and the 31st March. Eligibility largely depends on receiving certain benefits like Pension Credit or Income Support. Check the Cold Weather Payment eligibility page on the government’s website to find out if you’re eligible.

Energy Company Obligations

The ECO scheme aims to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. It requires energy suppliers to help households make their homes more energy-efficient. This assistance can come in the form of loft or cavity wall insulation, boiler replacement, or other energy-saving measures. Eligibility is often tied to income and certain benefits, so check with your supplier for more details.

Local Council Support

Many local councils offer schemes and grants to help residents manage their energy bills. This support can include advice on energy-saving measures, assistance with insulation, or financial aid for those struggling to pay their bills. Contact your local council to learn more about what help is available in your area.

Charities and Non-Profit Organisations

1. Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice provides free, confidential advice on a range of issues, including energy bills. They can help you understand your energy bill, deal with arrears, and provide tips on reducing energy consumption. You can contact them via their website or by visiting your local branch.

2. National Energy Action (NEA)

NEA is a charity dedicated to ending fuel poverty. They offer advice and support on energy efficiency, as well as campaigning for fairer energy policies. Their website has a wealth of resources for those struggling with energy costs.

3. Smart Energy GB

Smart Energy GB runs the campaign for the rollout of smart meters in Great Britain. Smart Energy GB also provides a range of advice and resources for those worried about energy bills, helping households make informed decisions about their energy use and providing information about smart meters.

Final Notes

As energy bills continue to fluctuate, it's important to stay informed about all the resources and support that are available. From government schemes and local council support, to advice from charities and the benefits of smart meters, there's a lot of different help available to make things easier. Taking advantage of these resources and making small changes to your energy usage, can help you to better manage your energy bills and keep your home warm and comfortable.

For more detailed advice and to find out what specific support you may be eligible for, visit the respective websites or contact the organisations mentioned. Stay informed, stay warm, and take control of your energy use.
