The Importance of Making Time for Yourself
If the last few years have taught us anything it’s that we all need to make an effort to take care of ourselves. Times are dark right now and it’s becoming that much harder to “switch off” thanks to a 24 hour news cycle and our collective addiction to social media. But taking time for yourself has never been more important.
Why it’s important to take time for yourself
Making time for yourself doesn’t mean carving out time to get some chores done or commiting an hour to a piece of work you’ve been putting off. It simply means allowing yourself the time to do something just for you – something that brings you joy and serenity.
Those who give themselves at least an hour or two a day for themselves will not only find themselves experiencing fewer mental health problems but will see improvements in their self-esteem, empathy and even creativity.
How to make time for yourself
What making time for yourself actually looks like is going to vary from person to person. Here, however, are a few examples you might want to consider.
Learn to say no – If you’re a natural people-pleaser then saying no to something can be the most difficult thing in the world. But learning to say no to something you don’t want to do and don’t have to do every once in a while, will do you the world of good.
Go on holiday – Since the pandemic, holidays have become something of a novelty for many of us. But they can be incredibly rewarding and, for some, getting away from home might be the only way they can fully turn off and recharge. It is, after all, difficult to worry about what needs to be done with the kitchen or the bathroom when they are hundreds of miles away. It’s also worth noting that, currently there is a Tui NHS discount in place for doctors, nurses and other NHS workers.
Indulge in your hobby – Whether it’s playing a sport, chilling with a good book or even playing video games for a few hours, hobbies are what engage our creative minds and leave us filling fulfilled. Whatever your hobby might be, give it at least a few hours a week.
Go for a long walk – Yes it might sound simple but you’d be amazed how reinvigorated you can feel after a good few miles. Of course, any exercise is a great way to make time for yourself but whereas in a gym you’re surrounded by other people, going for a walk or a run in nature will not only boost your endorphins but help you to appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
Leave work on time – This could prove difficult, particularly if you work from home. But having a firm deadline to stop work is always a good idea if you want to find a solid work/life balance.
