Whether you are already a keen amateur astronomer or you have never stargazed before, this article will hopefully enlighten you on the best spots for your next night-time adventure.

1. Pic du Midi, France

A mountain located in the French Pyrenees is dedicated to offering the most amazing stargazing experience. The characteristics of the mountain and the observatory’s placement provide panoramic views and an incredible atmosphere. This place is not to be missed if you are a keen stargazer.

It is a good enough spot for NASA scientists to take photographs of the surface of the moon, so it will undoubtedly be up to your standards too! This scientific fortress started welcoming the public in 2014, so you can now book an overnight stay at the Pic for a remarkable sleep under the stars.

2. Mount Teide, Tenerife

Observe a clear, starry sky at an altitude of 2,536m with the appropriate instruments at your disposal. Mount Teide is situated in the Teide National Park, away from any air pollution produced by big cities.

You could plan to stay in a hotel near the mountain such as the Parador de Cañadas del Teide Hotel, which is a short 14-minute drive from Mount Teide and a 60-minute drive from Tenerife South Airport. Book your experience with Volcano Teide and enjoy a night full of craters, mountain ranges and lunar wonders.

3. Tekapo Stargazing, New Zealand

Lake Tekapo offers a combination of relaxation and stargazing; rest in a hot pool while looking for constellations. This lake is part of an International Dark Sky Reserve, making it the perfect location for viewing the wonders of the universe.

The gateway to the Southern Alps and not far from Mount Cook Nation Park, Lake Tekapo could be next on your travel list. You can access this destination by flying into Lake Tekapo Airport and stay at the nearby resorts or hotels along Lakeside Drive.

4. Mauna Kea, Hawaii

This destination not only offers an incredible look at the night sky but also trails through volcanic craters, lava tubes and underground tunnels that could be added to your to-do list. Hawaii boasts a famous stargazing experience above the clouds at Mauna Kea.

Mauna Kea offers the world’s largest observatory, housing more than a dozen industrial telescopes. Take in views across the islands and gaze at the stars and milky way. Due to the sky being so clear, you may find you can make out many constellations just with the naked eye. You could stay at a selection of lodges located close to the mountain.

5. Shetland, Northern Isles

If you prefer a more grounded, quiet experience, the Shetlands may be a better option for you. This Scottish getaway offers one of the best views of the northern lights and the stars. The area has very little light pollution, so you get an astounding view of the sky. Wild camping is allowed for those who want a peaceful night off the beaten track too.,

Scotland has the largest expanses of dark sky in Europe, giving plenty of opportunities to visit areas with practically non-existent levels of light pollution.
