lift your interior with a seasonal colour palette

Autumn paint trends to warm up your home

Autumn equinox is fast approaching (Friday 23 September), and as the weather cools, homeowners may be looking to lift their interiors with a seasonal colour palette, providing their personal space with that warm and fuzzy feeling.

As the cost of living continues to rise, impacting our mood, you may be surprised to learn that your choice of paint colour could naturally warm your home.

Unsure which colours are best? From emerald green, burnt orange, denim blue and amber glow,  interior experts at Stelrad have discovered the ultimate autumnal colour palette to warm your home this season having scraped Instagram for the most popular shades.

2022’s most popular autumn colours

Green

The most popular colour group for Autumn is green with a total of 2,915 hashtags on Instagram. Emerald green is the most popular with 2,113 hashtags, but other colours include chalky green, forest green, fresh green, green sheen, moss, olive and ultramarine green.

Emerald green works well with many different colours, including peach, aubergine, rose, ruby red and pink, but can also work with shades of green as well. You should use it as a base, whether this is on your walls only, or integrating varying textures and tones in your accessories. A deep shade of green can work particularly well with natural woody tones, and monochromatic patterns, keeping your colour palette sophisticated, and classic but warm. It’s also a versatile colour, so why not incorporate it in your bedroom, living room or even kitchen?

Yellow

Yellow comes in second as the most popular colour group according to Instagrammers. With a total of 2,292 hashtags, autumn’s top trending yellow colour is caramel with 851 hashtags.

Other popular choices include amber glow, cream, mustard and wheat tones and hues. These sorts of colours are great at creating a welcoming atmosphere. Caramel and similar colours are quite neutral, but they are anything but plain. It works wonders when paired with black accents, but can also create a softness about a room when woodwork is included. To amp up the warmth of this colour, you should pair it with other warm colours such as brownish-red or even hints of green.

Blue

Blue placed third, according to Instagram data, with the most popular colour indigo. Other top-ranking choices include sky blue, classic blue, denim blue, moody blue, sea blue and watery blue.

Indigo can be the perfect hue for a bedroom, as it can create a serene atmosphere. A lot of people think that blue is a cool colour, but indigo can be warm and rich. If you are after a classic look then mix it with some softer colours, or if you want a modern look then go bright and bold. You can include warm wooden furniture, alongside some bright orange accents as well as red for strong warm accents. Make sure to include a few cosy textiles such as blankets or pillows, as both can easily warm up a room.

Brown

In fourth place is the colour group brown, with tan being the most popular shade. Brown is inherently a naturally warming colour because its base is orange/yellow and with other popular autumnal shades being chocolate brown, rich black brown and taupe, this colour palette can be the perfect addition to your home.

Incorporating tan into your home will give off a cosy warmth, especially when paired with white and other neutral tones. It is also the perfect colour to act as a base for your home and can therefore be paired with a wide array of accent colours, producing a chic, sophisticated and also modern look.

Grey

Grey is the fifth most popular colour group, considering only three specific shades ranked, including dark grey, grey haze and stone. The colour stone is the most popular choice for homeowners, potentially because it is a warming and neutral shade that goes with most other colour palettes.

Grey is a warm neutral that creates a calming effect in any room and can be paired with many different colours, just make sure to include a grey that has beige, yellow or red undertones in it. Make sure to add some warm accents to the room as well, including yellow, orange, red and neutrals. You can also add different textures to the room such as toss cushions in a warm colour or in a fun pattern, a textured area rug (e.g. following a tone-on-tone approach) or even a throw blanket in a warm yellow.
