Couples’ getaway in Devon
If you’ve got an anniversary coming up, or you’re simply looking for an excuse to see the best that the country has to offer, then it’s difficult to beat a trip down to the south coast. Let’s take a look at why, and how, you’d want to make a trip to Devon.
Why Devon?
This county is rich in history and culture, with plenty of natural beauty on display, too. There are long sandy beaches and quaint little medieval towns, each of which present a perfect tonic to the stresses of city life. The two coastlines flanking the county to the north and south are radically different, with the aforementioned sandy beaches dominating the latter, and precipitous cliffs par for the course on the former.
Things to do in Devon
If you’re looking for an active break, then you might consider a hike through Lydford Gorge, which you’ll find in north-western Dartmoor. It’ll take you past the eye-popping White Lady Waterfall, and the intimidating ‘Devil’s Cauldron’ whirlpool.
On the other hand, you might prefer something a little more restrained. A visit to Plymouth Gin Distillery is essential. It’s the oldest working distillery in the country, having been making quality gin since the late 18th century. It’s set in a building which dates back to the 1431. If you’re looking for something historically significant, but perhaps not quite so alcohol-infused, then you might instead take a trip to the cathedral in Exeter – which is arguably the most iconic building in the county.
Where to stay
If you’re planning a stay in Devon, you’ll have several different options to consider. Before you get there, however, it’s worth paying some attention to transport. If you’re travelling by car, then you can get new tyres in Ashford on the way out of Devon. That way, you’ll be free to travel around the county without worrying about the car itself.
A cottage will provide you with a base of operations if you’re staying on Dartmoor. You’ll get the sense of seclusion and privacy that you might be craving, as well as the comfort you need.
If you’d prefer not to have to cater for yourself, then you might go for a hotel, instead. You’ll find quality hotels in Salcombe; South Sands offers fantastic views across the Kingsbridge estuary, which among the most spectacular areas of natural beauty the county has to offer.
On the other hand, if you’re staying in Croyde, in the north, you might prefer something a little more affordable in the form of self-catering holiday lodges. You’ll get a choice of bedrooms, a location that’s near to the beach, and outdoor decking that matches nicely with the warm weather during a Devon summer.
