A guide to adapting to work from home permanently
Whilst it may have been driven by necessary to keep working through a pandemic, more and more companies are now choosing to allow their employees to work from home permanently. If you are one of the many who has realised the benefits of working from home and want to continue to do so, here is a look at how you can adapt to making this change permanent.
Get the right desktop computer for your role
The first and most important thing when it comes to preparing a space where you can work from home is to make sure you have the right device to complete your work. Depending on what you do for a living, you might need a specialist device to be able to complete your work. If you simply use basic software like Word and Excel to do your job, you might be okay with a very basic PC. If you use more complicated software like video or picture editing software, you will need a desktop computer with a good enough processor, large enough hard drive and other high performing components to be able to complete these tasks.
Just because you need a powerful device does not mean you necessarily need a large device. For example, Lenovo now do smaller versions of what you would expect a traditional desktop tower to look like. Although they are smaller, you will find they are just as powerful if not more so than the much larger device you used to have on your work desktop. The major benefit of having a much smaller device at home is you can easily store it away once you have finished your working day.
Make sure you are comfortable
Once you have got the device you will work on, it is time to think about what other devices you will need to be able to complete a productive day from home. For example, there is no point having a fast-working desktop unless you have a desk to place it on. Make sure you have a flat surface with enough space to fit your computer, as well as any other books, notepads, and that all important cup of coffee that you will need during the day. If your monitor is not at the right height to be level with your eye line, try raising the height of the monitor by placing it on some books. Make sure you have a comfy chair with enough back and neck support to reduce the chances of feeling aches and pains after work. If you want to look at chairs for your home office, you can find some here.
Find a private space to work in
As well as the right device and the right furniture to be able to complete your job, it is also important that you choose the right space in your home to complete your work. For example, if you are regularly having important meetings with people over video conferencing software, you will want to choose a quiet spot where you will not be interrupted by other members of your family. If you are working with sensitive data, make sure you pick a space where you will have enough privacy to be able to view these documents. Avoid anywhere that has windows out onto a busy street, where people could easily look in and see this information or ensure you have a privacy screen.
