The art of holidaying in the UK
Following last year's travel restrictions, the staycation became the holiday du jour. With many people unable to take their usual summer holiday abroad, Brits spent time closer to home – and discovered just how many holiday hotspots we had. And with this year's travel plans still looking uncertain, it might be time to start thinking about a holiday in the UK. If you're new to the staycation, we've got some handy tips to help you get the most out of your UK staycation.
Type of holiday
When contemplating your staycation, you'll need to think about the type of holiday you're looking for. With so many picturesque locations, hiking holidays in the UK are growing in popularity and are ideal for solo travellers, couples, and families. You can book a quaint cottage in the Lakes or the Highlands and experience breath taking scenes during the day and awe-inspiring night skies come sunset. Or if you prefer exploring new places, then why not hire a campervan or go camping?
If you're missing the golden sands of the med, there are plenty of seaside resorts that wouldn't look out of place in the French Riviera. The Isles of Scilly in particular has an air of tropical paradise about it. With secluded coves, azure seas, and palm trees, visitor can enjoy kayaking, swimming with seals and even wreck diving.
Luggage
Because of how unpredictable the great British weather is, you'll need luggage that's spacious and will allow you to pack for both tropical temperatures as well as torrential rain. If you're just venturing for a long weekend to the Cotswolds, then a weekend bag is just the right size to hold a few outfit changes. For longer holidays, suitcases that fit neatly into the boot of the car are a must. And investing in packing cubes can also help you not only save space but are lifesaver when it comes to keeping everyone's clothes separate and orderly.
For the journey
Chances are you'll most likely be driving to your destination – and potentially have hours in the car, so packing things that will keep you – and little ones entertained is a must. Noise-cancelling headphones are great for shutting out the world, as well as ensuring those around you can't hear what you're listening to and can be paired to phones and tablets.
If passengers don’t get carsick, downloading tv shows and films are a great distraction tactic – of course to avoid a meltdown, you'll want to make sure you have external battery packs to keep them fully charged for the journey!
Packing essentials
While wall to wall sun is never guaranteed on a UK staycation, packing sunscreen is a must – equally a good waterproof should also be thrown into your suitcase! Games like Jenga, UNO, and Connect4 can provide hours of entertaining, and are suitable for young children as well as adults – and they don't require batteries.
