Eight signs you desperately need a holiday
Holidays are fun and relaxing at any time of the year, but some breaks feel more necessary than others.
If you’re getting a little too angry about strangers standing on the wrong side of the escalator, flatmates that don’t replace the toilet roll or frustrating cliffhangers at the end of TV shows, then it’s probably time to take a breather somewhere sunny and remote.
Here are some key signs that you’re ready to book an early summer vacay….
1. You’re struggling to concentrate at work
Even though we’re just over a month into the new year, it feels a lot more like seven to you.
If you’re already opening your spreadsheets with a glazed look in your eyes, daydreaming about palm trees during meetings and making sloppy email mistakes to your boss, there’s a good chance you’re ready for a self-imposed digital detox.
2. Everything sends you into a rage
Whether it’s the TV remote that always seems to mysteriously disappear into the depths of the sofa or the self-service checkouts that definitely have a vendetta against you, the tiniest mundane mishap can incite disproportionate (and very public) levels of outrage from you.
Colleagues stay out of your way when you spot a typo in an email and friends are scared to tell you they’re running late. What you really need is a sun lounger and a mojito, stat.
3. You have an irrational hatred for anyone on holiday
Speaking of sun loungers, Is it just you or does everyone else you know seem to be on a beach somewhere? You’ve developed love-hate relationship with Instagram and every influencer that’s on a permanent gap year.
Oh, and if you have to see one more selfie of Becky on her ‘holibobs’ in Thailand, you can’t be responsible for your actions.
4. You’re in full holiday planning mode
You could basically write a dissertation with all the research you’ve done for your next break. You’ve looked at the flight prices, you’ve found the perfect stay and you’ve even scoured city guides for the perfect restaurant recommendations.
The only thing that’s holding you back is your own fear of maxing out all of your annual leave before the summer’s even started.
5. You keep telling people you need a holiday
Much to everyone else’s annoyance.
It’s all well and good complaining to everyone about how exhausted you are, but deep down you know that the only person who can rectify the issue is you.
6. You’re obsessing over your holiday allowance
You lost a whole week of annual leave last year because you weren’t strategic with your planning, and the year before that, you ended up spending a bunch of last minute, useless days off around Christmas on the sofa, waiting to go back to work.
This year you won’t be making the same mistake. An early escape is how the holiday pros make the most of their time away.
7. You’re bored of seeing the same things every day
The same bus stop. The same lunchtime cafe. The same faces. We’re all for routine, but we’re kind of sick to death of everything in our immediate vicinity right now.
8. You can’t remember the last time you took a break
Seriously. Your last holiday felt like it happened another lifetime ago. In fact, you had to scroll really far back in your Instagram feed to find the pictures, and you swear you had a lot less wrinkles then.
Mark our words – life’s too short for slogging it through a ‘start of the year’ slump, especially if you’re on the brink of repeatedly slamming your laptop shut or divorcing your partner over every small domestic.
It’s time to book a holiday and spend some time horizontal on a beach towel, for the sake of everyone around you.
